WELCOME WIN FOR SENIOR HURLERS

ALL COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 1

WELCOME WIN FOR DUNGARVAN

DUNGARVAN 1-16 MOUNT SION 0-17

Having given league walkovers to Roanmore and Passage, Dungarvan will be happy to have got their season off the mark with a well deserving win over Mt. Sion away last Saturday evening. Dungarvan were without  Patrick Curran, Johnny Burke, Kealan Daly,Ryan Donnolly, Eoin O Callaghan, Brian Curran and Mikey Burke while Stephen Roche and Martin F. O Neill were absentees  for ‘Sion. Austin Gleeson retired after twenty minutes.

Stars of the show for the winners were County footballer Michael Kiely, who had little or no hurling preparation  done for the small ball game, wing back Jack Lacey chipped in with 0-4 from play in an overall very impressive performance and goalie David Flynn who saved a crucial second half penalty from Martin O Neill.

Michael Kiely had Dungarvan first three scores(2f) with Austin Gleeson and Scott Ryan getting the home side off the mark. A superb strike by Jack Lacey was followed by two scores from midfielder Jamie Gleeson for ‘Sion and the home side forged in front with a brace of pointed frees by Evan McGrath, 0-6 to 0-4.

Mt. Sion were confined to a further 0-1f in the second quarter and no return from play since the 12th minute as the visitors took a firm grip on proceedings. Two points from play by Michael Kiely was followed by a second Jack Lacey point and the Blues got the rub of the green when a Michael Kiely ‘65’ went all the way to the Mt. Sion net, 1-7 to 0-7.

The winners dominated the final minutes of the half with Kyle Healy and Kiely(f) and Lacey again finding their range, 0-6 the difference at the break.  Both teams struck two first half wides.

SECOND HALF

Mt. Sion won the second half by 0-10 to 0-7, scoring the final 0-2 of the game to ensure an exciting finish.  Martin O Neill opened the scoring from play with one of Dungarvan’s leaders on the field, Colm Curran replying similarly. Michael Kiely popped over his fourth point from play and Dungarvan still held a 0-7 lead after an exchange between John Kennedy and a fourth Kiely pointed free, 1-13 to 0-9.

At this stage, the start of the final quarter ‘Sion began to take control and scores by Martin O Neill, Scott Ryan 0-2(1f) and Alan Kirwan made it a 0-3 differential with 53 minutes played. During this scoring burst by the home side, they also won a penalty but Blues goalie David Flynn brought of a fine save from Martin O Neill to help keep his team ahead, 1-13 to 0-13.

Jack Lacey and PJ Fanning traded minors as did Donal Power and Colm Curran as Dungarvan kept their noses in front, 1-15 to 0-15. Michael Kiely had Dungarvan final score from a free before Martin O Neill(f) and PJ Fanning finished off the scoring.

A hard earned but welcome win for Dungarvan, who can build on this while Mt. Sion will be disappointed overall after playing a number of challenge games against outside teams such as Ferns and Midleton in their preparations to deny Ballygunner a record ten in a row titles.
