FOOTBALLERS REACH SEMI FINAL

RADLEY ENGINEERING WESTERN INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

DUNGARVAN INTO SEMI FINALS

DUNGARVAN 0-11 MODELIGO 0-7

Dungarvan qualified for the Western IFC with a hard earned 0-4 win over Modeligo at the Fraher Field last Friday evening. Lenient refereeing led to off the ball incidents throughout the first half when at least one player from each side could have been sent to the stands. Proceedings settled down in the second half and Dungravan deserved their win in kicking 0-8 from play compared to 0-4 by Modeligo.

However, it was Modeligo who opened the scoring with David Hickey pointing in the first minute. There was no further scoring for the next eight minutes and once Dungarvan settled, they scored the next five points which, at the end of the day, was the deciding period in the match. Of these five scores, Michael Kiely scored three of them from frees while Cathal Curran scored two fine points from play.

Modeligo’s Sean O Donovan scored the final point of the first quarter while just after this short break, Dungarvan’s Jack Lacey had a good opportunity to score a goal in the town end.

The secondquarterf is one best forgotten with no score from play and the emphasis as much on the man as on the ball. Six yellow cards where dished out, four to Modeligo and two for Dungarvan. The winners did not score in the second quarter while Shane Troy pointed frees for Modeligo in the 20th and in the third minute of added time to leave just 0-1 the difference at half time, 0-5 to 0-4.

SECOND HALF

Dungarvan started the second half as they did the first with three uninterrupted scores from play. Cathal Curran kicked over a superb score in the 33rd minute and Joe Allen pointed three minutes later as Colm Curran replaced the injured Kieran Power, 0-7 to 0-4.

Michael Kiely provided for a second Joe Allen point on 41 minutes  but a litany of  wides by the Blues, seven in total in the second half,  kept Modeligo in touch on a scoreboard reading 0-8 to 0-4 though they did not score in the third quarter.

One of Modeligo’s best players on the night, Bernard Wright kicked a 46th minute point with Michael Kiely replying three minutes Later, 0-9 to 0-5. Sean O Donovan and Darragh Lyons traded minors from play by the 54th minute and when Michael Kiely kicked over his fifth point one minute later, the Blues enjoyed their greatest lead at 0-11 to 0-6.

The yellow card count reached seven(4-3) in the 576th minute and one minute later a Shane Troy pointed free finished the scoring in a game best forgotten from a sporting point of view.

Dungarvan are now qualified for the last four and the remaining semi final berth from this group will be decided this week in a local derby between Modeligo and Ballinameela.
