CLUB BIDS SAD FAREWELL TO VICE PRESIDENT MICKEY TOBIN

Mickey Tobin SFC Medal Winner  1945

Mickey Tobin, third from right in front row. Selector on the Junior football western and County winning teams of 1973.

When the sad news broke early this week of the regretted death of one of our club vice presidents Mickey Tobin in Dungarvan hospital, the Dungarvan club had lost one of its most distinguished members in its long history both on and off the field.

Mickey was highly regarded as a true gentleman inside and outside the club and our sincere sympathy is extended to his relatives and his lifetime friends, Terry Donnolly and Tom Cunningham.

From Killineen, the Pike, Mickey was first mentioned in the Dungarvan club when he played at wing forward on our minor football team in the Western final in 1941 and the following year he won a County minor hurling medal.

However, Mickey’s first love was football and in 1943 he made his debut on the club’s senior side and he made the corner forward position his own for the next thirteen years.

How good a footballer Mickey Tobin was is seen in he winning five senior championship medals with the club, four in a row from 1945 to 1948 and his fifth medal was won in 1954 when he was coming to the end of his playing career. Mickey also played in the 1956 decider when Mt. Sion deprived him of another County medal on a score of 3-2 to 2-4. He had also played in the finals of 1949 and 1950.

Our late vice president was involved with the County senior football team that lost out to Tipperary by 3-8 to 3-3 in the 1949 Munster championship and he was on the junior team that drew with Limerick in 1950.

His playing days coming to an end, Mickey  served on the club committee in 1952 and he held the position of Vice Chair in 1958. The same year he was elected one of the Western Board delegates, a position he held until he retired from it in 1965.

Always interested in the future of the club, Mickey served on our first ever under age committee in 1971 while he was a selector on our Western and County junior football winning team in 1973.

In 1974 he assumed the role of club chairman and four years later he was back on the sideline again as one of our intermediate football selectors.

The club celebrated its centenary in 1985 and Mickey Tobin was selected at corner forward on our club team of the century. In his later years, Mickey was always interested in the fortunes of the club, regularly enquiring in how we got on in games and he was always a great supporter of our club’s activities.

His contribution to the club over many years was such that he was unanimously elected one of our vice presidents in the late 1900’s an office he held up to the day of his death.

In his nineties when he died, many of Mickey’s generation are gone before him but he will always be regarded in the Dungarvan club as one of our greatest on and off the field. May the sod of the Dungarvan he loved rest lightly on his noble breast.

Brickeys 3-9 Dungarvan 0-11.

Referee Tom Dee (John Mitchels) pictured with team captains Mark Shalloe (Brickeys) on left and Gavin Crotty (Dungarvan).

It’s down to the last chance saloon after our defeat to Brickeys in the Part 1 relegation senior football championship game at the Fraher Field last Sunday afternoon. After a poor first half during which we conceded two goals and were fortunate that Brickeys missed three more, we trailed by 2-6 to 0-8.

Brickeys Kieran O Neill finds himself surrounded by Dungarvan players left to right Gavin Crotty, Luke O Callaghan and Darren Duggan.

However, we were a different side in the second half and with 44 minutes played we held a 0-1 lead on a score of 0-13 to 2-6. We had a number of chances to drive on from here but a give a way goal in the final minutes gave the Brickeys a 0-3 win.

Scorers : Gavin Crotty 0-8(5f), Kenny Moore 0-3(2f), Kieran Power, Ryan Donnolly, Mike Kiely and Patrick Curran 0-1 each.

Team :  Mark Boland; Kealan Daly, Aaron Donnolly, Jack Lacey; Kealan Barry, John Curran, Mike Kiely; Darren Duggan, Kieran Power; Patrick Curran, Gavin Crotty, Joe Duggan; Ryan Donnolly, Kenny Moore, Luke O Callaghan. Sub : Luke Egan for Kieran Power(b/c),  Fionn Hallahan for Joe Duggan (51).

LATE MAURICE WALSH

The club extends its sincere sympathy to the family of Maurice Walsh formerly of McCarthyville, Abbeyside who died on Thursday September 7th.

Maurice played in goal on our junior hurling team in the late 1970’s and outfield on our football side. May he rest in peace.

SFC : DUNGARVAN V BRICKEYS……WHEN LAST THEY MET……..

JJ Kavanagh and Sons County Senior Football Relegation Play-Off 1..

Brickey Rangers v Dungarvan in Fraher Field

Sunday September 9th at 2pm.

Seventh Championship Meeting of Brickeys and Dungarvan

This isn’t the kind of game these local rivals would like to be contesting on this Sunday evening at the Fraher Field  but their results have determined so and come the final whistle, one team will be safe in the senior ranks for another year at least and the loser will have one more opportunity of remaining in the top tier.

Parish neighbours Brickeys and Dungarvan haven’t met on too many occasions in the senior football championship since its foundation as both haven’t often been in the senior grade at the same time. The last time they played in the grade was in 2012 when Brickeys won by 2-8 to 0-11 and before that the clubs were paired on five occasions with three of these games taking place.

Brickey and Dungarvan Senior Football Championship Meetings :

1942 : Dungarvan walk over to Brickeys.

1946  :Dungarvan 2-3 Brickeys 1-4. A controversial late penalty kick was awarded to Dungarvan and scored by Jim Bailey against Stephen Curran in goal.

1947 : Brickeys walkover to Dungarvan in County Final. Board refused Brickeys a postponement .

1954 : Dungarvan 2-5 Brickeys 0-7.

1967 : Brickeys 4-3 Dungarvan 1-4.

2012 Brickeys 2-8 Dungarvan 0-11.l

Of the two clubs, Brickeys were grouped in the more difficult one this year and they were defeated by Ballinacourty by 2-14 to 0-4, Nire by 4-15 to 4-9 and Clashmore/ Kinsalebeg by 1-16 to 3-7. In the play off game for a quarter final spot Kilrossanty won out by 4-14 to 1-7.

Dungarvan’s group was not as difficult but Portlaw beat them in their first game by 0-9 to 0-6. The Blues regrouped to gain a win over Ardmore in Bushy Park by 2-18 to 2-10 and in their final Group match they played well against County champions Stradbally before losing by 3-12 to 2-11. They also fared well in their play off game before being ousted by Clashmore/ Kinsalebeg by 0-20 to 0-18 after extra time.

Going on their results against Clashmore/ Kinsalebeg, there seems to be little between the teams and Sunday’s match could be an encounter of the close kind. It is also a novel pairing as the clubs have crossed swords in this grade on so few occasions. The reward is great, though, as the winners enjoy another year in the senior grade and they will push their rivals into the ‘’ last chance saloon’’ situation.

Brickeys will have Tommy Lynch  between the posts on Sunday, fronted by a resolute defence in Philly Walsh, Johnny Cooney and Darragh O Grady.  Kieran O Neill and Mark Cummins were as lathair against Kilrossanty and they could be employed in the half line where Conor Whelan and Darragh Herlihy are also an option. Oran Keevers and Conor Phelan may be the midfield pairing while up front the speedy Christy Murphy and Cormac O Grady will compliment the efforts of such as Carthach Shalloe, Emmett Gaffney, Maurice Daly, Ryan O Neill, John Morrissey and absent the last day Conor McGrath who remains one of the best forwards in the County.

Dungarvan will be happy with their past two performances but not with the results. In our own view, they have not enough football preparation done to closeout games and this was the case against Clashmore/ Kinsalebeg and Stradbally, both of whom  they had on the wrack for a good while.

Mark Boland has been a consistent keeper for them this year while Aaron Donnolly is a capable full back flanked by Kealan Daly and Jack Lacey with Darragh Lyons and Jamie Nagle coming into contention also. The Blues half back line of Conor Sheridan, Kealan Barry and John Curran played well against Stradbally and this will be an important sector with a young full line behind them.

Playing at centre back Kieran Power must be shortlisted for footballer of the year and a lot will depend on his display if his side is going to compete well.  His midfield partner will more than likely be another County player Joe Allen, who if he hits form ,may be a key figure in the game.  Gavin Crotty will lead the half forward line alongside Michael Kearney and Mike Kiely, the latter perhaps  being better placed in the half back line or midfield which would suit his running with the ball abilities.

Darren Duggan has fared well on the edge of the square while a number of options in this forward sector include Kenny Moore, Luke O Callaghan, Ryan Donnelly, Patrick Curran, Luke Egan, Seamus Hannon, Fionn Hallahan and Joe Duggan.

Local derbies are a great occasion on the days before, during and after and this one should be no difference.  This game could go either way and it probably will unless there is stalemate even after extra time. There is a fence nearby and as there is little to choose between these teams, we will sit on it this time round.

Forecast : A Draw.

WHEN LAST THEY MET….     Sunday 19th of August, 22nd August, 2012.

BRICKEYS RETAIN SENIOR STATUS

Brickeys ……………………….. 2-8; Dungarvan …………………0-11.

Both teams enjoyed periods of dominance in this very well contested local derby game at the Fraher Field last Sunday evening and it was the Brickeys who were on top when it mattered most in the final quarter scoring three unanswered points when the sides were level at 2-5 to 0-11.

With both teams without a win in the championship to date, this was a vital local derby for both clubs and it is the Brickeys who will deservingly be in the hat for the 2013 championship with Dungarvan facing St. Saviours in a relegation play-off on the weekend of September 22nd/23rd to see who will drop down to the intermediate grade.

Of the two sides, Dungarvan started the better leading by 0-5 to 0-2 after 15 minutes and they were playing some fine football throughout the field. Ryan Donnelly pointed a free after two minutes which was answered by a very well taken ‘45 by Brickeys   centre back Philip Walsh. Carthach Shalloe registered the first of his four pointed frees after five minutes and then Dungarvan took over in the scoring stakes with four unanswered points via Colm Curran, Ryan Donnelly, from play and from a placed ball and an-other from centre forward Gavin Crotty. Blues full forward Kevin Daly’s 8th minute goal effort was denied by Brickeys keeper Joe Grant where lengthy kick-outs were a feature of the game. The first goal of the game came after 17 minutes when their best forward on the night Christy Murphy availed of a slip up in the Dungarvan defence to race through to leave the scores level at 1-2 to 0-5. The Brickeys enjoyed outfield superiority at this stage but registered a number of wides before Ryan Donnelly restored the Blues lead from a free. Again, Brickeys finished the half stronger with a Carthach Shalloe free in the 25th minute and Laurance Houlihan put Christy Murphy through for a point seven minutes later when a further goal looked possible, 1-4 to 0-6 at the break.

second brickey goal

In the early minutes of the      second half Dungarvan were on top with Kenny Moore pointing after just 16 seconds followed by a score from Colm Curran who was his team’s best player on the night. Carthach Shalloe (f) levelled the game for the fifth time after 34 minutes before Brickey’s wing forward Laurence Houlihan shook the Blues’ net for a second goal after 39 minutes, 2-5 to 0-8. Credit Dungarvan, they answered this set-back in style with three points in the next six minutes from Colm Curran, Ryan Donnelly and Kenny Moore, both from frees. The final quarter was dominated from play and on the scoreboard by the Brickeys who finished the game very strongly. Conor Mulcahy kept his team in the game after 48   minutes with a point blank save from Carthach Shalloe who pointed from a free five minutes later. The destination of the valuable two championship points and the retention of senior status was decided with scores from Conor McGrath in the 54th and 57th minutes to leave the Brickeys celebrate a local derby victory with Dungarvan left to face a hugely important survival game in five weeks time.

Goals win games and Dungarvan conceded two of the soft variety while much of the credit for the Brickeys win must go to their seven defenders who kept the Blues forwards at bay goal wise for the full hour. Their midfielders Tommy Lynch and Martin Houlihan shared parity with their opponents while up front Christy Murphy and Conor McGrath fared best. Despite losing this was Dungarvan’s best display of the championship and they were well served on the night by Colm Curran, Shane Kearney, Jamie Nagle, Gavin Crotty and Ryan Donnelly.

Scorers: Brickeys: Christy Murphy 1-1, Carthach Shalloe 0-4, Laurence Houlihan 1-0, Conor McGrath 0-2, Philip Walsh 0-1.

Dungarvan: Conor Mulcahy; Trevor Galvin, Conor Sheridan, Darragh Fitzgerald; Shane Kearney, Derek Barry, Jason O’Mahoney; Colm Curran, Jamie Nagle; Eoin Healy, Gavin Crotty, Cormac Curran; Kenny Moore, Kevin Daly, Ryan Donnelly. Subs: David Houlihan, Darren Duggan, Sean Ryan, Cory Roche.
