DUNGARVAN MOURNS THE DEATH OF MICHAEL WRIGHT

The town of Dungarvan was plunged into deep sadness and shock when word broke last Sunday night and Monday morning that one of its greatest and most popular characters, Michael Wright of Congress Villas was knocked down and fatally injured while out walking his dog around the roads he loved so well.

The Mad Hatter’s many friends, relations and colleagues, young and old in association and in support with his family have been numbed and silenced with grief and finding it difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a lively character who enhanced our lives by his warm presence and jovial company among us.

Certainly, Michael was one of the great characters of the town in this era and the Dungarvan club expresses its deep sympathy to Teresa and family and this unbelievably sad time in their lives.

Clubs and associations in the town have been invited to form a guard of honour from Drohan’s Funeral Home to the Parish chapel on Saturday morning for Michael’s church ceremonies and any of our own members young and old who would like to take part are requested to gather at 10am in club colours.

Sympathy is also extended to the Kyne family of the death of Nurse Mary. Mary’s dad Tom served as secretary and chairman of our club in the 1930’s and 40’s as well as being chairman of the Western Board.

The death of Teresa Kiely, The Orchard, robbed the club of one of our best supporters over the years. Sincere sympathy is extended to Jimmy and family at this sad time for them.

50 YEARS WED

Congratulations to our club president Margaret Cunningham, O Connell St. and her husband Jim who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary over Christmas. Margaret never misses a game we play in whatever the grade.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Darragh Lyons and Michael Kiely who received serious injuries playing for the County hurling and football teams respectively last week.

WELCOME ABOARD

A big welcome is extended to David Hayes and Ryan Duggan who transferred to the club for this year’s championships.

Congratulations to Patricia Silke, who was elected chairperson of our juvenile sub committee at our recent adult club meeting.

ON INTER COUNTY DUTY

Well done to Darragh Lyons who played a great game with the Waterford senior hurling team against Clare in the Fraher Field last Sunday. Darragh was one of the best players on view.

Meanwhile out in the Gold Coast, Michael Kiely started with the County footballers against Clare but unfortunately he received a serious injury in the first half which ended his involvement in the match. Joe Allen came on as a second half sub at midfield and John Curran was also on the panel of players.
