FIRST HALF GOALS SECURES DUNGARVAN VICTORY

DUNGARVAN 2-22 DUNHILL 0-12

Played in Carrigbeg last Sunday afternoon, an under strength Dungarvan fifteen still proved too strong for a Dunhill combination  who will find it a major task to stay in the top grade come the end of the championship.

First half goals by Darragh Lyons, Patrick Curran(f) and Eoin O Callaghan secured an early win for the Blues who led at the short whistle by  3-11 to 0-6. Lyons started at corner forward but before he went back to play a sweeper role to telling effect, he had the ball in the Dunhill goal after just one minute.

Eamonn Murphy opened Dunhill’s account from a free and but for his accuracy from placed balls, his team would have slumped to an even heavier defeat. Dungarvan claimed the next five scores via, Joe Duggan, Patrick Curran(‘65’), Tristan Loftus and Patrick Curran, again, 0-2(1f), the trend for the game set on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-1.

Points at the start of the second quarter by Colm Curran(2) and Johnny Burke stretched Dungarvan’s lead further and when a Patrick Curran long distant free went all the way to the Dunhill net, the contest was more or less over o a scoreboard reading 2-8 to 0-4.

Matters got worse for Dunhill a few minutes before half time when Johnny Burke and Cathal Curran combined to send Eoin O Callaghan in for goal number three for the Blues  with Dunhill’s only response being a brace of fine scores from play by midfielder Dylan Power.

Dungarvan struck one first half wide to Dunhill’s two.

SECOND HALF

Without ever repeating their first half scoring, Dungarvan won this moiety by 0-12 to 0-6. Dunhill scored just 0-1 from play via Adam Green, relying again on Eamonn Murphy for scores, he finished the hour with 0-10(8f, 1’65’). Twice at the start of the half, Murphy went for goal from close in frees but the Dungarvan defence stood firm.

Sixteen minutes into the second half, Dungarvan held the same lead as they did at half time which showed their own lack of the killer instinct. Two of their best players, Joe Duggan and Tristan Loftus(2) dissected the posts and with Eoin O Callaghan and then Patrick Curran from play and from frees pointing, the final quarter was played out tamely.

Patrick Curran showed a return to form here with 1-12 to his credit while Tristan Loftues and Joe Duggan also stood up to the mark with a sharing of 0-5 from play. Cathal Curran did a good man marking job on Eamonn Murphy confining him to 0-1 from play and others to shine for the winners included Man of the Match Darragh Lyons, Mikey Burke, Conor Sheridan, Colm Curran and Johnny Burke.

Eamonn Murphy ploughed a lone furrow for Dunhill with most assistance coming from Mike Hally, Conor Quinn, Dylan Power and Adam Green.
