WESTERN INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

RADLEY ENGINEERING WESTERN INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1.

Dungarvan Open their account by the minimum.

Dungarvan 1-13 Modeligo 0-13 This intermediate football tie played on Wednesday last at the well appointed Abbeyside venue between Modeligo and Dungarvan held and had everybody on tender hooks right up to the last shrill of Tommy Sullivan’s whistle. Both teams deserve great credit in serving some exciting fare in this close encounter. Dungarvan opened the scoring in the 3rd and 6th minutes with points from Gavin Crotty. After a nice build up Mike Troy pointed for Modeligo ehile to minutes later Shane Troyhad the teams on level terms. Rian Reddy, after a fine piece of individual work, put Modeligo ahead with a glorious point. Gavin Crotty and Patrick Walsh exchanged points whle Joe Duggan and Gavin Crotty, the latter score coming as the result of a foul on Kieran Power, scored for Dungarvan. Indeed it must be related that Gavin Crotty was Dungarvan’s main scorer and best player at this point of the game, while Sean O Donovan was starring for Modeligo, who has a team were playing delightful fre flowing football using the overlap to great effect. A pass from Joe Duggan to the unmarked Michael Kiely found the net from close range. Modeligo replied with points from Shane Troy, Rian Reddy and a close in free duly pointed by Shane Troy brought us to the half time break on a score of Dungarvan 1-5 Modeligo 0-7. On the resumption Gavin Crotty pointed for the Blues while John Devine replied for Modeligo. A Darren Duggan free and fine inter play saw Michael Troy raise a white flag for Modeligo. Another Crotty point was answered by Pat O Donovan who received from Shane Troy after a fine solo run. Joe Duggan pointed after a defence splitting pass from Darren Duggan. A fine point blank save by Boland, the custodian in the Dungarvan goal, saw James Troy score a point from the rebound.. Indeed Modeligo were unlucky not to register a major score here.. Another Michael Troy point left the score 0-13 to 1-9. A fine Johnny Burke point brought the teams level. At this point a Modeligo victory looked likely but credit the Blues they stood firm. Gavin Power and Tristan Loftus replaced Oisin Morrissey and Brendan Cullinan while Mick Devine replaced Niall Browne for Modeligo. Jamie Nagle, using all of his experience, provided an overlap and his effort from 35 yeards put Dungarvan ahead. Both Gavin Crotty and Shane Troy exchanged points and well known referee Thomas Walsh, from a ‘45’ pointed to draw the teams level, 1-12 to 0-15. Kieran Power, who had been quite enough throughout, came thundering into the game, drawing on his experience, and it seemed to inspire Dungarvan. It was Jack Lacey who split the posts and so it was Dungarvan who opened their account victoriously by the narrowest of margins. Dungarvan were best served by Gavin Crotty, Jack Lacey, Kieran Power, Michael Kiely and Jamie Nagle. Entering the game as favourites, Modeligo lost nothing in defeat and they were best served by Pat O Donovan, Patrick Walsh, Rian Reddy and the Troys. This outfit will have a major say in outright Western honours. For Dungarvan, any victory with the big ball is to be welcomed and surely the team will grow in confidence from this outing.
