INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALLERS RETAIN WESTERN TITLE

RADLEY ENGINEERING WESTERN INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

DUNGARVAN WIN BACK TO  BACK TITLES

DUNGARVAN 2-9 MODELIGO 0-6

The same two teams met in the 2020 final which went to extra time before the winners were decided but there was no question of such a tight encounter this time round at the Fraher Field last Sunday afternoon.

Apart from most of the first quarter, Dungarvan led by three or four points throughout and try as they did, Modeligo could just not get the scores that would get them within touching distance of the reigning champions.

Modeligo started the better with scores by Seanie O Donovan and Shane Troy(f) inside five minutes. Cathal Curran opened Dungarvan’s account before the back from injury Gavin Crotty was off target with a free attempt.

Pa Walsh made it 0-3 to 0-1 in the 11th minute before an opportunist trade mark goal by Michael Kiely from a Gavin Crotty delivery gave the Blues what turned out to be a permanent lead, 1-1 to 0-3. Crotty pointed the last score before the first water break with Kiely’s goal having settled his side.

Joe Allen was influential throughout this match and he kicked two fine left legged points from play on the restart. Modeligo had a good goal scoring opportunity by Mick Devine after good work by Nicky and Sean O Donovan but his attempt went wide of the target.

The first half ended with Shane Troy(f) and Gavin Crotty from play trading scores and Dungarvan were ahead by 1-5 to 0-4. Dungarvan kicked six first half wides and Modeligo three.

SECOND HALF

The story of the second half from a Modeligo point of view was that they did not score from play. Dungarvan dominated but they didn’t drive on regards the scoreboard.  Modeligo started the second half as they did the first with the first score, a Shane Troy pointed free.

Dungarvan defender Gavin Power did very well to save a goal attempt from David Hickey in the 34th minute, which if converted, may well have changed the course of proceedings. Gavin Crotty punished the miss with a pointed free at the other end but a further miss from a free by the same player and a goal effort by Cathal Curran back off the cross bar after good work by Mike Kiely and Darren Duggan kept Modeligo in touch at 1-6 to 0-5.

Michael Kiely and Shane Troy pointed frees before the second water break to leave the difference the same as it was at half time, Dungarvan ahead by 0-4.

Modeligo did not score in the final quarter with Dungarvan, at  last, making sure of victory. Sub Kieran Power pointed a superb minor from play in the 47th minute before Shane Troy was wide from a free in front of the town end goal.

This gave Dungarvan a 0-5 advantage for the first time and when Michael Kiely pointed a 56th minute free, this contest, which was not of a great standard, was more or less decided.  Man of the Match Michael Kiely made doubly sure when good work by Cathal and Colm Curran feed him the ball in front of the country end goal and he cleverly finished the size 5 to the net.

Modeligo were reduced to fourteen players in the 60th minute with a straight red being issued to sub Pa O Donovan in an encounter where 54 frees were awarded overall. This game will not go down in the history of this championship as one of its best with the amount of frees conceded by both sets of players producing its start stop nature.
