Dungarvan GAA Club Notes 4th September 19

Senior Hurling Dungarvan 2-17 Abbeyside 3-12.

Nothing can quite match the local rivalry that exists between Dungarvan and our neighbours Abbeyside and such was the case last Sunday evening when the teams met in the quarter final of the Senior Hurling Championship in famed Fraher Field. On an ideal night for Hurling it was clearly evident from the start that there wasn’t going to be much between the sides as the sides went point for point on the scoreboard. At half time we trailed by just a single point on a 0.9 to 1.7 scoreline encouraged by the chances which we had created but disappointed in our inability in not converting them. The second half replicated the first with missed chances from both teams and while things were fairly quiet it was only in the final quarter that this game took on a life of its own. Having conceded a goal we trailed on a 0.14 to 2.11 scoreline before a powerful run from Joe Allen saw him hit a thunderous shot to the top corner to bring us back level straight from the puck out.It was an instant response displaying the great fighting qualities in the side and evidence that this game was going to the wire. Going into the final stages the tension was beginning to reach another level and nerves beginning to fray somewhat. A Gavin Crotty point saw us edge back in front on a 1.16 to 2.12. However we were hit a hammer blow again with the concession of another goal to put us two points behind with the clock in the red with three additional minutes to be played out and the situation looked rather bleak. But we didn’t panic and a Ryan Donnelly point narrowed the deficit to the minimum. We continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded when Michael Kiely finished a Gavin Crotty delivery to the net with seconds left. Still time for another Abbeyside attack which thankfully we dealt with and run out winners on a 2.17 to 3.12 scoreline in a game that will go down in the history annals of memorable games between the teams and was a credit to both sides. Well done to everyone involved on a hard fought victory and never say die attitude. The reward for this victory is a semi final game against reigning County and Munster champions Ballygunner but that can wait for another day. Under 13 Hurling

Last Wednesday evening saw our Under 13 hurlers complete their final group match when De La Salle made the visit up to Clogherane. With both teams at this stage unbeaten this was going to decide who would emerge top of the group so it was all to play for. From an early stage it was clearly evident that there wasn’t going to be much between the sides as scores were hard earned and both defenses on top. At half time we trailed by just a single goal on a 0.4 to 1.4 scoreline. An Eddie Burke goal on the resumption set us up nicely but we could not shake off our opponents. In what was an exciting and tense second half scoring was very limited and by full time the teams could not be separated on a 1.6 to 1.6 scoreline. This draw meant that we qualified for the quarter final draw which was made live on Facebook last Saturday morning and got the lads up nice and early to view. The outcome of the draw will see us travel out to play An Gaeltacht.
