Dungarvan G.A.A. Club Notes
Senior Hurling Championship
The championship got off to a very disappointing start last weekend for the club with our squad falling at the first hurdle. While our boys played well it was evident that Lismore were the better team and deserved their success on the night. Nevertheless, this young Dungarvan team are resilient and will bounce back and look forward to a better duel against Ballygunner this coming weekend. The final result was Dungarvan 1-17 Lismore
1-20.

With everyones eyes on a certain Mancunian derby later that evening on Monday, 30th April, there was also our own local derby taking place when we travelled over to Abbeyside to play Ballinacourty in the fourth and final round of our football league campaign. On what was a terrible night for football with both teams battling against both wind and rain it was a credit to the teams to actually contend with the elements alone. Going into this game a win would guarantee our position in the play-offs and with this in mind we were eager to be in charge of our own destiny. Early indications did not seem to indicate that however as we started rather sluggishly and the concession of an early goal did nothing to help our cause. Indeed, even at this early stage such was the dominance of Ballinacourty lads it was hard to see us coming back. Some forays upfield failed to yield any dividends for us and by half-time we had incredibly failed to register any score whilst our opponents had rattled up 1.3.
The second half was to prove as frustrating for us as we failed to get any grip of the game whilst been totally outplayed in all sectors of the field.
It took the introduction of Ronan Geoghegan to register our first point and unbelievably our only score of the game mid way through the half. The final scoreline and concession of 3.9 was fairly decisive and it was a fairly disillusioned and bitterly disappointed group that headed home that evening.
This heavy defeat is a severe dent to our championship prospects and hard to see how we could rise from this. With our league campaign now complete with just two wins from four games our destiny lies in the results from other games in order for us to qualify for a semi-final position.
Interestingly, when we were leaving the field Ballinacourty's B side in the U-14 football grade were just ready to commence their game, such is the dominance of Ballinacourty having the luxury of being able to field two teams when the majority have difficulty in fielding just one.
Panel: Conor Duggan, Gary Donnelly, Mark Boland, Dion Keoghan, Glen Waters, Dylan Murphy, Keelan Daly, Luke O¹Callaghan, Stephen Donovan, Lee Moore, David Bauman, Rory Donovan, Eoghan Flynn, Daniel Kiely, Conor Sheehan, John Power, Ronan Geoghegan, Colm O¹Shea, Crohan McGregor, Mark Allen, Conor Hayes Brendan Cullinan, Jack Lacey, Willie John O¹Shea. Peter Queally, Shaun Murray, T. J. Kiely.
John O'Regan Cup
Four members of our U/14 age group were part of the Western panel who retained the John O¹Regan cup last weekend with success over their Eastern counterparts. Congratulations to Mark Boland, Conor Hayes, Stephen Donovan and Peter Queally and hopefully they will continue to represent the club at county level on any future grades ahead.
Feile Update
Everyone is now well aware of our participation in this year¹s Feile Peil competition in Laois Offaly region taking place over the week-end 22nd-24th June and the fundraising campaign continues to offset the huge cost to actually travel to an event such as Feile. Recently the members of the panel were sized up for the various items of sporting wear which will get plenty of use even after the Feile.
Last Friday, 4th May we were allowed collect at either end of the Shopping Centre and many thanks to the Shopping Centre for allowing us access and to the many people who helped collect throughout the day. This Sunday night a progressive 45 card night will take place in Lawlors Hotel with an 8.30 p.m. start and again we would appeal to everyone to support this venture either by playing or helping out on the night. Panel members have also got sponsorship cards in their possession for a sponsored run which will take place a week prior to our departure to the event. In these harsh economic times we appreciate the circumstances people are experiencing both on a business and personnel level so if you can help out in any way it would be certainly be much appreciated.

Last Sunday morning it was another local derby when our fellow parishioners, the Brickeys, made their way up to Clogherane to contest the semi-final of the Western Football competition. On what was a great morning for football both teams gave us a cracking match. As is the norm with these morning matches it takes us a while to wake up to things and a fairly lethargic first half performance we were behind at half time on a 0-4 to 1-5 scoreline.
On the restart we got back on track with a Toby Taylor goal and even had the audacity to race into a 1-7 to 1-5 lead mid-way through the half. We relaxed somewhat however thinking the game was done and dusted. This allowed our opponents some heart and two points in quick succession soon had them on level terms. A further point from a fisted effort which showed great presence of mind as this type of score would be unusual for this age group level had us behind going into the remaining minutes. Chances did arrive for us to level things but we failed to take them and at the final whistle we went down on a 1-7 to 1-8 scoreline.
This completes our participation in this competition and we done very well to reach this semi-final stage considering our involvement in last year's U-12 last Autumn was fairly haphazard and interest fairly low so we have improved a good bit since then.
The hurling competition is pencilled in to commence for this age group on Bank Holiday Monday, 4th June, when Cois Brid are our opponents at Clogherane.
Panel: Seanie McGrath, Conor Duggan, Gary Donnelly, Conor Sheehan, Dion Keoghan, Greg Waters, Colm O¹Shea, Rory Donovan, Shaun Murray, Luke O¹Callaghan, Keelan Daly, Dylan Murphy, Brendan Cullinane, Willie John O¹Shea, T.J.Kiely, Toby Taylor, Lee Moore, Conor Keoghan, Leigh Kelleher, Kevin Joyce, Brendan Collins, John Power, Edward Fraher.

Round 3 of this Western Rural Development competition took place at Clogherane last Friday evening when Abbeyside were our opponents. Needless to say we were up against it as this is a powerful Abbeyside team and despite our best efforts on the night we were well defeated. Great to see a large number of the younger age group make an appearance on the panel as all the game experience can only bring them on further.
Fridays Panel: Seanie McGrath, Greg Waters, Edward Fraher, Brendan Collins, Shaun Mulcahy, Conor Keoghan, Patrick Walsh, Kyle Hackett, Kevin Joyce, Alex Shanahan, Tristan Loftus, Jack Donnelly, James O Callahan, Noel Duggan, Paul Sheehan, Eoin Dunne, Conor Coward, Johnny Burke, Dylan Cliffe, David Flynn.
Under 8 Age Group
This age group continued their hurling training session last Saturday morning at Clogherane and turned up in great numbers. This Saturday we will be travelling down to Carriganore training centre to participate in one of their many blitzes. Hopefully, the weather will not be as cold as on our previous football visit. Many families will be involved in the First Holy Communion as this Saturday morning. It¹s the turn of St. Joseph¹s to make their First Holy Communion and the celebration will involve a large number of this particular group. Needless to say it will be a very memorable time in the lives of the boys. We would like to congratulate the boys, their parents, families, guardians and of course their teachers on this momentous occasion. Hopefully, the weather will be favourable and we hope everybody has a very enjoyable day. Your absence from Carriganore is well excused. For those not involved in the Holy Communion transport will be leaving from the C.B.S. at 9.45 a.m. nice and early for a Saturday morning and hopefully will be returned by 1.30 p.m. Other games for this section will be coming up shortly as the Play and Stay games are due to commence on Monday, 21st May.
This will involve both hurling and football participation and will take place on each Monday night thereafter.
Saturday Morning
While the Summer weather has not yet arrived, last Saturday morning was some bit favourable as our younger section make their way to Clogherane. While this venture to Clogherane is relatively new to this group these sessions are a gentle introduction to the basic skills of the game. Great to see all the regular faces turning up and what was even more encouraging to see was the number of boys and girls who turned up with their own hurleys. If parents are in any doubt about the size suitable for their child the coaches will be more than happy to advise you and a hurley supply will be available on Saturday mornings.
As this group are only starting out we would suggest that parents refrain presently from purchasing the expensive helmet equipment and wait until later in the summer where a child¹s continued participation would suggest that they would continue hurling for the foreseeable future and get value out of their helmet purchase. Again we appeal to anyone that have either hurleys or helmets lying outside in the garden shed to get them back into circulation once again by either passing them onto family and relatives or by dropping them to the field at any time.
Its often the case that previous juvenile members have outgrown their hurl or indeed have changed their helmets and have discarded their old one. A portion of this equipment would be greatly appreciated and put to good use This session caters really for anyone who is able to stand upright, hold a hurley instead of a hand and just want to enjoy themselves on a Saturday morning. There is no age restriction with the parents and guardians the best qualified to decide on their child¹s ability to take part.
The emphasis needless to say will be on participation and the subsequent enjoyment attained from their involvement. Again a reminder that these sessions are free of any charge. The session will last for just one hour starting at 11.00 a.m. and finishing at 12.00 noon. Let¹s get them out there.
Dungarvan Camogie Club
U-14 Camogie
To date, we have played our second championship game at home to Portlaw. Our girls played their hearts out and gave a spirited team performance. Final score, Dungarvan 8-7, Portlaw 0-0.
On Sunday, 29th of April, we had an early start travelling to De La Salle, who were the hosts for the Féile competition for this year. In our first game we battled hard against the wind and against Lismore. We were unlucky to concede a few goals. Final score Lismore 4-1, Dungarvan 0-0. The result from the first game meant that we were contesting for the shield. Here we came up against the Brickeys. We put it up to them and showed a big improvement from when we met a few weeks ago. Final score, Brickeys 3-2, Dungarvan 1-0. Well done to De La Salle who were the overall winners and will represent Waterford in the national finals.
U-10 Camogie
Our U10s had their first outing last Saturday in Ring. By all accounts they put in a massive performance winning all their games. Full report next week.
Well done to two of our U16s, Kayleigh and Taylor, who were part of the U16 county camogie panel who contested the U16B Munster Final last Saturday in the Gold Coast. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side and they were beaten by two points in the end. However, this team showed great potential and we wish them all the best for the upcoming All-Ireland series which begins in July.
Well done to the U14 County football panel who won the U14B Munster final last Saturday in Fraher Field. Best of luck to all our girls in future games.
A gentle reminder that there is still registration money outstanding. Please return this as soon as possible to any team mentor or a committee member.
Dungarvan Ladies GAA
Under 16 County champions: After beating Ardmore last week in Old Parish, Dungarvan Under 16 ladies team qualified for the B County final against near neighbours Abbeyside. The game was played in good sunny but very windy conditions in Kilmacthomas on Bank Holiday Monday. Dungarvan were slow to settle despite playing with a very strong wind in the first half and it took brace of Lauren Mc Gregor goals followed by one from Ellen Ryan to settle the team down and play some very attractive football. In the second half, Abbeyside came more into the game but the Dungarvan backs were resolute in their defending and held firm. Everybody played well in the game, Caoimhe in goal was cool under Abbeyside pressure while the full-back line of Kayleigh, Taylor the captain, and Jade gave very little away, Courtney, Katie H. and Nadine, before she was forced to come off, were strong in the half back line and set up many attacks Ciara Hurley must have covered every inch of the field, while midfield partner Dawn was a revelation in the second half when she went back in the back line. Up front Catherine, Nicole and Lauren O¹Shea were creating many chances and gave the Abbeyside half back line plenty to do. Inside in the full forward line Lucie, Lauren McGregor and Ellen took their chances well. Subs Emma, Katie Duggan Sullivan, Dervla and Jane all played their parts well when they came in to the game. Kelly who was out injured and unable to play gave great back up support along with Orna on the line making sure the girls got water when needed.
The final score was Dungarvan 6-10 Abbeyside 1-8. Scorers for Dungarvan Lauren McGregor 3-5, Ellen Ryan 1-1, Lauren O¹Shea 1-0, Dawn Power 1-0, Catherine Murray 0-2, and Ciara Hurley 0-2.
Intermediate Ladies: Our Intermediate Ladies had a good win over a strong Comeragh Rangers in the Seven a side competition on Saturday last. The final score being Dungarvan 5-8 Comeragh Rangers 0-12.
The Dungarvan line-out was Richael Hayes, Angeline Kiely, Clodagh Behan, Kellie Duggan, Faun Duggan, Rebekah Hurley, Aoife Nagle, Anne Marie Tutty and Lisa Fitzgerald. Scorers for Dungarvan Becky 2-1,Angeline 1-2, Kellie 1-1,Clodagh 1-1, Richael 0-2 and Faun 0-1.
Under 12 Blitz:
Our under 12 team took part in the County Blitz recently in Bushy Park. A total of 16 teams took part and like players from the other clubs manby of our girls were getting their first experience of competitive football. We opened brighly with a win over Na Déise and then we met up against a strong Ballymac team and in this game we scraped through by 4 poins. This brought us to a final against Tramore and after a pulsating game of football we were beaten by a single point. While defeat was our lot on this occasion the girls really enjoyed the experience of playing together on the day and are already looking forward to the championship.
County News: Well done to all connected with the County Under 14 team who had a great win over Tipperary in the Munster final in Fraher Field last weekend. Ciara Hurley was captain, Caoimhe Veale was the goalie, Catherine Murray came on as a sub and other members of the panel from the club who had played in previous games were Kelly Tutty, Katie Duggan Sullivan, Clodagh Curran and Kaiesha Tobin. A special well done to Pat sullivan who is the Manager of the team while Micko kept the girls hydrated during the game.
St. Mary¹s School win the Mini Sevens: Congratulations to the girls of St Mary's on their wonderful display in retaining the Mini 7's title with a great win in Walsh Park recently. Well done to their Mentors Miss Wall and Miss Mc Govern. Membership is now overdue and should be paid to Anne Hayes as soon as possible.
